In 2017, data breaches are breaking records. See which industries have been most affected and learn what you can do to protect your business!
2017 Data Breaches Outpacing 2016
The number of data breaches in the U.S. rose 29% in the first half of the 2017 to a record 791 incidents. Another report found that employment and tax records were particularly vulnerable, and that the recent surge in hacking has resulted in led to “the breach of more than six billion records so far this year.” Cybersecurity is a 137.85 billion dollar industry. Great strides have been made in cybersecurity tools and technology. But the sheer volume of data breaches remains startling.
Why Data Breaches aren’t Slowing Down
One reason data breaches aren’t slowing down is that information can quickly be monetized by cyber criminals online. But perhaps more important is how companies are responding to the threat. Most company leaders have not woven privacy and security into the fabric of their companies’ core values. They’ve implemented cybersecurity measures, sure. But too few have made it a top priority, one that ranks in importance with their founding company values.
2017 Data Breaches by Industry
Make no mistake – every company that holds sensitive information is at risk of a data breach. But that doesn’t mean that the cyber criminals haven’t picked out their favorite targets.
The Identify Theft Resource Center report broke down the data breach victims into five categories: financial, education, business, health/medical, and government/military. Below are the sectors organized from least- to most-targeted through the first half of 2017.
- Government / Military – 5.6%
- Financial – 5.8%
- Education – 11.3%
- Health / Medical – 30.7%
- Business – 54.7%
The Health / Medical sector saw the largest uptick in breaches in 2017 compared to 2016.
